PostHeaderIcon Better Engage Your Visitors Via Graphic Design

Having great content alone does not guarantee continuous and growing traffic. One needs to package the website appropriately to make it presentable and appealing to the users, and graphic design can play a very important role in this.

A typical website uses many types of graphic design elements. An elegant logo is indispensable for any website, since it is an image that represents your companys uniqueness. The logo should suitably convey the nature of your products or services and also create a recall in the mind of your website users. Web branding is a crucial part of your company’s identity.

Graphic design can significantly enhance the look and feel, and ease of use of a website. The header of the website and navigation layout is crucial for a website, and can easily be optimized using graphic design. The layout should be simple, appealing, yet intuitive, and should have only the necessary amount of graphics.

The subject matter of the website and delivering a good user experience are the two key factors to consider while deciding the graphic designs of a website. The graphic design layout for a website should be developed only after a careful study of what appeals to users and how the content can be best presented to these website visitors.

Latest features and promotions, and the popular parts of the website can be emphasized using graphic design, thus making it easier for the users to navigate to these areas. However, it must be kept in mind that too much highlighting or loud design can be a turn off and can confuse the website users.

The theme of the website should be considered before deciding the colour palette of the graphics, and too many different colours should be avoided as they can negatively affect the aesthetics of the site.

If suitably used, graphic design not only improves the look and feel of the website, but also makes the website appear more credible. Better returns can be expected from your website if you enhance its look and feel using the right graphic designs.

PostHeaderIcon InDesign Scripting – Finding And Changing Text

Adobe InDesign has long offered users the option of automating their workflows through scripting. Although scripts may be writing in AppleScript (Macintosh only) or VBScript (Windows only), the most satisfactory scripting language is the cross-platform, and very widely used, JavaScript. One of the simplest and yet most useful operations that can be accomplished using scripting is the automation of Find/Change. InDesign’s Find/Change feature is one of the program’s most powerful features and it is one of those features which can be fully automated by scripting. In fact, you can achieve a lot more through scripting than you can by manually performing a Find/Change operation.

The InDesign scripting framework offers three commands performing Find/Change operations: findText(), findGrep() and findGlyph(). A good deal can be accomplished using the straightforward findText() command. However, if you need to make fairly complex changes, and if you have the time and patience to find the right regular expression, you can use the findGrep() command which is designed for performing searches for regular expressions.

To script a Find/Change operation, you first of all need to set up the preferences that will be used when performing the Find or Change. Firstly, you set the properties of the findChangeTextOptions object: parameters include caseSensitive, wholeWord, ignoreHiddenLayers and ignoreMasterPages. Next, you set up your findTextPreferences and changeTextPreferences parameters, the most important of which are findWhat and changeTo, respectively. It is also usually a good idea to clear out any preferences that may still be in play from a previous search. This is done by setting both the findTextPreferences and changeTextPreferences objects to nothing, using the commands: app.findTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing and app.changeTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing.

Just as when performing Find/Change manually, the findTextPreferences and changeTextPreferences objects offer all of the formatting parameters normally available with text objects.

One of the practical exercises which we give to students attending our InDesign scripting courses is to create a script which searches for the name of a company within a document, changes the format of the text to look like a regular web hyperlink (blue, bold, underlined) and then makes it a hyperlink. To change the format of the text, we simply use the appropriate properties of the changeTextPreferences object, such as fillColor, fontStyle and underline.

PostHeaderIcon Basic Principles of Readability for Websites

Readability is a very important quality for any website. In order for the content and text of the site to have an impact on visitors, they must first be able to read it without trouble. Reading from a screen can be challenging in many situations, so this is not as small of an issue as it may seem.

In this article we’ll look at six keys to designing for readability. Keep these points in mind and your content will be much more effective.

Spacing

Many websites have problems with spacing, especially content-heavy sites. Trying to fit huge amounts of content into small areas of above the fold will make it very hard for visitors to read the text as it will all be crammed together.

Whitespace or negative space is a big key. It may seem like wasted space, but it’s actually allowing everything to have a greater impact. Less is more.

Font Size

Because each visitor will have their own unique preferences, it is important to allow text to be re-sized by the user. By using CSS to set text sizes with ems or percentages, you will allow visitors to increase or decrease the size of the text in their browser.

Font size is also key for making important text stand out. However, use this technique sparingly as the less you use it the more impact it will have.

Font Choices

Unlike when you are working with print design, in web design there are a relatively small number of web-safe fonts. If you use other fonts your visitors may not be able to see it as you have it designed. There are ways around this through things like sIFR that allow you to replace fonts.

One of the main causes of poor readability is choosing the wrong font or using too many different fonts. Generally you should stick with no more than 2-3 fonts on any website, otherwise it can impair readability.

Width of Text Lines

Even though a high percentage of internet users are using widescreen displays with high resolution, lines of text that are too wide can have negative impacts on readability.

Generally speaking, text columns should not be wider than about 700 pixels, otherwise than can get very difficult to read. Likewise, very narrow lines and columns can also cause poor readability.

Font Weight

Bold text can obviously be very effective for helping text to stand out, but it should be used in moderation. Overuse of bold, or italics for that matter, can decrease the level of readability and it will lose its impact.

Distractions

Text can only have an impact when there aren’t other things distracting the visitors attention. Using less in your design will help to keep the focus on the text, and only use text that has a purpose.
